New jobs in offing as Shrewsbury hotel date set
Tuesday 8th November 2011, 5:00PM GMT.
A new £8 million hotel will open in Shrewsbury in early 2013 and create 45 jobs in the town, it was revealed today.
Council planners have given the go-ahead for the construction of a five-storey Premier Inn hotel and restaurant in Smithfield Road, which will include 136 bedrooms.
James Anderson, a spokesman for Premier Inn, said construction on the site was now scheduled to begin in February, with the building programme expected to last for about 12 months.
He confirmed the number of jobs that would be created and added that the creation of the site was linked to plans to create the new £150 million New Riverside shopping centre, which is being worked on by Shearer Property Group and Ignis Asset Management.
“The new hotel is close to the Darwin Shopping Centre and forms part of the masterplan for the site being developed by Shearer Property,” he said. “It is not part of the plans per se but is part of the masterplan for Shrewsbury.”
The plans were yesterday welcomed by council chiefs.
