Fewer teenage pregnancies across Telford

Fewer teenage girls fell pregnant in Telford & Wrekin last year – but the number that did is still ‘significantly higher’ than the national and regional average.

NHS Telford & Wrekin is this year set to miss a target to cut the number of teen pregnancies by more than half, a report says.

There were 160 pregnancies for girls aged 15-17 in 2010 – 11 fewer than in 2009, a meeting of NHS Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust’s board will hear.

On average, 49 girls out of every 1,000 became pregnant in Telford in 2010, the report says.

That compares with the national rate of 37 out of every 1,000 teenage girls becoming pregnant.

However, the Telford figure still represents a fall of almost a quarter compared to 1998, the first year that rates were recorded.

In that year, 65 girls out of every 1,000 became pregnant in Telford.

The PCT was set a target of cutting teenage pregnancy rates to 28 per 1,000 girls by 2010/11. But it is anticipated it will not reach this target until 2014/15.

The board will also be told the current budget for tackling teenage pregnancies will remain at £120,000 in 2011/12.

However, the report adds ‘early indications are significant savings will be required across local authority budgets in 2012-13’.

In a joint statement Telford & Wrekin Council and NHS Telford and Wrekin said: “Reducing teenage pregnancy remains a priority for the council and NHS Telford & Wrekin.

“It is good to see an improvement but we still have more work to do.

“We do not anticipate proposed spending reductions having any impact on our ability to support a programme of actions.”
