Angler ‘attacked men with hammer’
Tuesday 8th November 2011, 9:00PM GMT.
An angling club secretary attacked two brothers with a hammer after violence erupted over match fees at the end of a fishing competition in Shropshire, a court has heard.
Darran Kelly hit Richard Perks on the head leaving him bleeding from two wounds which later had to be glued together at hospital, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told yesterday.
The hearing was told his brother Philip Perks managed to dodge the full impact of a blow, but was hit on the shoulder.
Kelly, aged 43, of School Road, Donnington, Telford, denies assaulting Richard Perks, causing him actual bodily harm, and assaulting Philip Perks by beating.
Kelly, match secretary of the Thomas Telford Angling Club, further denies possessing a hammer as an offensive weapon.
Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting, told the court that the attacks happened on April 3 at a pool off Leegate Avenue, Leegomery, Telford, where the angling club was staging a match.
Richard Perks told the jury he went to the far side of the pool, while his brother stayed by the car park, where Kelly and another man were fishing.
He said shortly before the match ended at 3pm he heard his brother rowing with Kelly, who it is claimed owed Richard Perks £35 he had lent him to cover match fees the previous year.
Mr Perks said he heard his brother shout at Kelly and Kelly replied: “I’m off to fetch the boys.”
Mr Perks said Kelly returned about 10 minutes later.
He said: “He shouted at my brother ‘are you still here?’ The driver’s door flew open and Darren Kelly ran out and he was armed with a hammer”.
Mr Perks said it was an engineer’s hammer, weighing about 2lbs.
He said: “Darren Kelly ran at my brother and took a full power swing at his head.
“I just ran forward to help him. He pulled the hammer back and aimed a full power blow at my head.”
Mr Perks said he was left in tremendous pain.
The court heard Kelly then left the scene of the incident in his car.
Mr Jones told the jury Kelly allegedly claimed later in a police interview that the debt he owed was for drugs he bought from the men.
The trial continues.
