Premier Inn wins approval to build Shrewsbury hotel
Monday 7th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Plans for an £8 million hotel in Shrewsbury town centre, creating more than 40 jobs, have been given the go-ahead.
Premier Inn has been granted planning permission for a 136-bedroom hotel and restaurant in Smithfield Road.
The hotel will built be on the site where Telephone House stood.
Permission for the scheme has been granted by Shropshire Council officers using delegated powers.
Bosses behind the scheme previously said the site was likely to open in spring 2012.
Council officials say a hotel was suitable for the site and would help boost the viability of the town centre.
They say a travel plan to promote sustainable ways of getting to the site will have to be submitted and approved as part of the conditions of its approval.
A design and access statement in support of the application said the hotel was expected to be popular with business and tourist visitors to the town.
“Shrewsbury is a key tourist destination,” it says.
“The town centre also serves as a retail centre for Shropshire and Mid Wales, with some light industrial units and distribution centres on the town centre outskirts.
“The site for the proposed hotel is located on the main transport route in and out of Shrewsbury and the main public transport links.”
The report added that Whitbread, which owns the Premier Inn brand, intends to run the site as a budget hotel.
