6,000 Newport homes without water in reservoir fault

Monday 7th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.

Thousands of residents in Newport were left without water after a fault with an underground reservoir. Severn Trent officials say they believe up to 6,000 people could have been affected.

The switch-off happened on Saturday at around 4.30pm and lasted for about three hours.

Severn Trent Water today said it had received complaints from more than 1,000 people living in the town who said they had no water.

A resident living in Barnmeadow Road, who did not wish to be named, said the problem had forced him to cancel a planned bonfire night party at his home.

He said: “We were going to have friends and family around for a party but we had to cancel as we had no water.

“We were therefore unable to use the toilet, wash our hands and boil our frankfurters.”

A spokeswoman for Severn Trent said a pipe which filled the reservoir developed a problem.

She added: “The problem was caused by an underground reservoir which serves the area.

“It’s a massive storage tank.

“There was a fault with one of the pipes which fills the reservoir.

“Within 90 minutes we had identified the problem, but it takes time to re-fill so it was about three hours before the water supply returned.”

It is believed the problem with the pipe occurred because of the flash flooding in the area on Friday evening.
