A 10-year-old Shropshire boy has experienced life in the boardroom after being appointed by Olympic great Dame Kelly Holmes as a junior director of a school trips company.

George Wellington, from Coleham Primary School, was one of six children to be appointed as junior directors of JCA which has its flagship residential centre at Condover Hall, near Shrewsbury.

It was the brainchild of Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly who advised her fellow board members at TUI Travel PLC’s specialist and activity sector to start using children’s insights to develop their school trips businesses.

Dame Kelly was appointed as a non-executive director of the travel firm’s education division earlier this year.

George particularly impressed the board of directors with his creative and enthusiastic application, securing his own place as one of the junior directors of JCA.

During his first board meeting, George revisited many of the activities on offer at Condover Hall, including the hidden basement floor that he will play a role in developing. One of his ideas included turning the basement rooms into a maze of activities that involve children collecting hidden keys with letters on to create a word in order to complete the maze.

Dame Kelly said: “I have been completely blown away by the fantastic ideas that George and his fellow directors came up with at their first board meeting. When trying to heighten our own creativity as adults we are frequently told to ‘think like children’– and it’s true.”
