Oswestry parking fees waived in festive trade bid
Thursday 3rd November 2011, 10:56AM GMT.
Parking charges in Oswestry will be waived at certain times in the run-up to Christmas.
Visitors to the town will be able to park for free from 2pm every day during the last week of December and from 5pm every Friday next month. Oswestry Chamber of Commerce requested that the charges should be scrapped in a bid to attract more shoppers and boost trade.
The town council agreed to the move last night, but some councillors expressed doubts about how successful it would be.
The meeting heard it would cost the council £3,000 in lost income.
Councillor Heather Bickerton said free parking over the festive period had been tried and did not work.
She said: “All the people who park their vehicles come down and park free and fill up the Central Car Park. We have seen it happen. It does not benefit the traders because people who actually want to come into shop cannot find a car parking space and they go elsewhere.”
