Pupils could get free Oswestry festive ice rink entry
Tuesday 1st November 2011, 10:16AM GMT.
Schoolchildren could be handed free tickets for Oswestry’s Christmas ice rink, it has emerged.
Town councillors will tomorrow be working through the finer details of bringing the ice rink to Festival Square, including details of how to distribute tickets. A report to the council suggests offering free tickets to primary schools in the area for afternoon sessions.
It also asks councillors to consider the possibility of giving tickets to the Oswestry Chamber of Commerce to hand out as competition prizes.
Last month members of the markets and car parks committee agreed the synthetic rink should be installed in the town centre for one day during the Christmas Live celebrations on December 2.
The rink will be made of high density polyethylene which provides a high quality skating surface.
David Clough, Oswestry Town Council’s market manager, said: “There is a report going to this week’s meeting giving various options on how to arrange the usage of the ice rink.”
The report to the council suggests that people should be allowed to use the ice rink between 1pm and 9pm during half-hour sessions. The rink can hold up to 25 skaters per session.
During the Christmas Live event there will be a variety of entertainment, including an outdoor concert.
The first band will take to the stage at 6pm with music going on until 10pm.
The streets will be closed to traffic and filled with stalls, a fun fair and other attractions.
Mr Clough said: “We hope that this year’s event will be bigger and better and we will add the ice rink which is amazing.
“The rink will be in Festival Square from 1pm until 9pm.
“This is the eighth year in a row that we have held the event.
“There will be big rides including a ghost train and the waltzers throughout the town.”
The event will also be a Santa’s grotto for youngsters.
