Death figures ‘not reflective’ of standard of care
Friday 28th October 2011, 2:00PM BST.
Death rates at Shropshire’s two main hospitals were more than 10 per cent higher than expected, sparking fears among a patients’ group today.
Health chiefs claim the figures should not be used to judge the standard of care at the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals.
But Hannah Thompson, managing director of patients’ group Community Involvement in Care and Health, said: “From our point of view we always have concerns about anything like this. However, we also attended their board meeting and they are bringing in a number of initiatives to address these figures.”
The Department of Health statistics show that the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, which runs both hospitals, had 2,422 deaths in 2010/11 – more than 10 per cent above the expected death rate of 2,168.
