Council seeks meeting over Radio Shropshire cuts
Friday 28th October 2011, 1:24PM BST.
Council chiefs are to request a meeting with the chairman of the BBC Trust over proposed cuts to BBC Radio Shropshire.
A special Shropshire Council cabinet meeting heard yesterday that the station is the ‘fourth emergency service’ in Shropshire due to its ability to keep the public informed in real time during a crisis like the floods, the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 and last year’s big freeze.
The cabinet meeting was called after the BBC said Radio Shropshire is to have its output reduced as part of cutbacks, which will see 20 per cent removed from its budget over five years.
Members voted unanimously to write to the BBC Trust to request a meeting with the chairman.
