Warning after bogus caller strikes in Oswestry
Thursday 27th October 2011, 8:00AM BST.
A bogus caller targeted elderly people living in three homes in the Oswestry area – including one aged 93 – falsely claiming there had been a gas explosion in a bid to trick his way into their homes.
The conman called on at least three homes on Monday night claiming there was a problem with gas and electricity supplies.
He told one of the pensioners that there had been a gas explosion nearby and showed a homemade identity tag in a bid to appear official.
But the quick-witted residents refused to be taken in, turning him away and raised the alarm. They have been praised for their actions by police officers.
