Shrewsbury’s Battlefield Enterprise Park was not the only site that met key criteria for a proposed £60 million incinerator, it has been revealed.

A planning appeal heard yesterday that a site in the village of Ford, near Shrewsbury, also met the criteria.

But John Hollister, an associate at URS Scott Wilson, said the site was discounted when further investigation showed that a width restriction on a bridge would pose problems for HGV vehicles.

Hugh Richards, representing Shropshire Council at the hearing at Shirehall, claimed that the Battlefield site had been chosen simply because it was more preferable for Veolia.

But Mr Hollister denied this and said detailed work had found that Battlefield would be a better location.

He said: “The Ford site is considerably less suitable.”

Mr Hollister admitted that there had been some minor errors in information given to English Heritage but said it was not sufficient enough to have had any impact on the organisation’s decision to withdraw its objection to the scheme.

Mr Hollister earlier told the hearing that the incinerator met council development plans. He said Veolia should be given permission despite Shropshire Council’s planning committee rejecting the plan last year.
