Petition launched on Shropshire hospitals shake-up

A petition has been launched to force a parliamentary debate on the shake-up of Shropshire hospitals.

The e-petition, similar to one which triggered a debate on the Hillsborough disaster, has already collected more than 500 signatures on the Government’s e-petition website.

Under the shake-up plans, women’s and children’s services would be downgraded at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

But NHS chiefs say it would become the main surgical centre in the county.

Telford PRH would take on consultant maternity and neonatal and paediatric units.

MPs say any petition gathering 100,000 signatures on the website would cause the Government to hold a debate on the issue.

The petition, entitled Retain Consultant Maternity, Neonatal and Childrens Services (inc Oncology) at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shropshire has been created by Wendy Hayeck.

In the petition she says: “The children’s cancer ward built by public donations will be closed and also moved to Telford.

“The outline business case for this relocation clearly shows that there will be a reduction in beds on maternity and the oncology unit will be smaller than currently.

“Pregnant women and sick children from Mid Wales have to face a further 45-minute journey to seek medical help.

“A 35,000 petition against the move in February showed the strength of feeling in Shropshire and Mid Wales but was all but ignored by the trusts involved.

“Sign this petition and force secretary of state to review these plans and retain services in the hub of Shropshire.”

But PRH League of Friends chairman Alan Millward warned those fighting against the proposals that both hospitals could lose out if the changes were not implemented.

Mr Millward stressed: “Do they realise if campaigners, like Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski, get what they want, both PRH and Shrewsbury will miss out?

“We will lose services to surrounding hospitals and this would be terrible for the county.”

Since when has it taken 45 minutes to get from RSH to PRH – 15-20 minutes at the most. Please get facts right. If maternity and paediatrics remain at RSH does surgery and trauma go to PRH? I wouldn’t bet on it.
