New hope for former British Sugar site

The eyesore site of British Sugar’s former factory in Shropshire has moved a step closer to being brought back into use.

The factory in Allscott closed in 2008 after more than 80 years and was demolished soon after.

But the brownfield site has struggled to attract interest from buyers. Now Associated British Foods, which owns the land, has taken on Northern Trust to help with promoting the site.

The firm specialises in industrial and warehouse developments and plans to organise a consultation event in the New Year to ask people what they think should be done with the site.

Might have been a bettter site for a railfreight twerminal for a start, with easier rail access.

Or, heaven forfend, a delivery site for sugar beet to be shipped by rail to the processing plants in East Anglia – benefitting farmers and consumers alike.

And possibly other’bulk’items mined, grown or manufactured in Shropshire that can’t be handled at Donnington because of the shape of that sadly under-used site.
