New design for Abraham Darby Academy canopy
Monday 24th October 2011, 5:30PM BST.
A steel canopy at Telford’s new £35 million Abraham Darby Academy which collapsed injuring five workers will be replaced with a new design, council chiefs said today.
The structure was removed piece by piece after the incident in August, just hours after children collected their GCSE results in an adjacent building.
Telford & Wrekin Council bosses today said a report on exactly what happened was due to be submitted to the authority by the end of November.
Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said residents would be consulted on new plans from the developers Kier Moss.

Whats the point of the canopy?
Many buildings have been fine for 100 years or more without one, i can name loads.
So why is it needed? oh i know it’s just to waste our money and line someones pockets.
Correct me if i’m wrong.

Of course you’re wrong – it’s to protect the little dears from getting skin cancer while they’re outside having a fag…

This is purely a guess, but perhaps it’s part architectural (i.e. decoration) and part functional.
Canopies can help to shield a building from the sun, cutting down on solar gain in the summer. Cooler classrooms = less discomfort for pupils.

In reply to the comments about the newley designed canopy at Abraham Derby School, as weather it is functional or not, the fact is the school is a part of your community and all the “Schools for the future” have entrance canopies, it would have been a shame for the school, and all of the future Pupils to have a constant reminder to the events of the 25th August 2011.
I have been informed the new canopy is a lot stronger than the original design?.
In closing, I would be grateful to take this chance to thank all of the workmen and Emergency teams who helped with the rescue of myself and my fellow workmates that day, also to the kind Lady who sent the get well card and chocholates thank you.
I hope the School will be remembered in the future for academic achievements not the collapse of the canopy.
