Church steeple plan to speed up rural broadband
Monday 24th October 2011, 10:19AM BST.
Shropshire has one of the worst broadband connections in Britain and, if successful the Selattyn project could become a model for other rural ‘not spots’.
Retired clergyman Reverend Mark Turner is a member of the parish council. “My internet is less than two mbps, incredibly slow,” he said. “It does cause problems, not only for residential users but particularly for the businesses that are based in the Selattyn area that really need higher speed broadband.”
He added: “There is obviously a cost to this but. . . we do really need better internet connections.”
Shropshire Council is looking at ways of improving internet speeds. Together with Telford & Wrekin, it has been given £8.2m from central government to improve broadband speeds and coverage in Shropshire.
A spokesman said: “We’re one of the 26 worst areas in the country for broadband and we’re trying to fix that.”
