Metal thefts cause M6 delays
Thursday 20th October 2011, 11:59AM BST.
Thousands of motorists are facing delays on one of Britain’s busiest stretches of motorway today after thieves stole cables that were powering road signs.
The raiders struck on the M6 between junction 10 for Walsall and 10A for Telford and Shrewsbury, putting signs and CCTV cameras out of ac- tion. Transport bosses cannot now open up the northbound hard shoulder during busy periods.
The managed motorway scheme, which aims to reduce congestion by opening up an extra lane, currently cannot be activated following the cable theft on Monday night.
Today workers were attempting to reconnect cables.
The southbound M6 carriageway was also affected but highways staff have now managed to get its CCTV cameras and signs up and running again.
It comes after thieves targeted the same location only last month, stealing copper cable from underneath the motorway.
