Assembly cuts Powys budget by £1m

Powys County Council’s budget settlement from the Welsh Assembly has been cut by more than £1 million, it was revealed today.

Russell George, Montgomeryshire AM and county councillor for Newtown, said it was a ‘hammer blow’ to residents.

The council will receive £178.1m for 2012/13 from the Assembly, down 0.6 per cent from £179.16m.

The move has left councillors ‘worried’ about one of the deepest cuts in Wales.

Powys County Council was today unavailable for comment.

The settlement was ann-ounced by local government minister Carl Sargeant, who said it was ‘in line with the Welsh Government’s commitment to protect schools and the vulnerable’.

But Mr George said: “Once again the Welsh Government has given Powys Council another raw deal in its revenue budget for next year.” He said the 0.6 per cent reduction is equivalent to a £1m cut, not factoring in five per cent inflation.
