Clun Bridge is closed for repairs
Tuesday 18th October 2011, 11:17AM BST.
Clun Bridge is closed from today for up to a week while engineers repair damage caused by vehicles.
Highways chiefs said safety fears had forced them to close the 15th century bridge, which carries the A488 over the River Clun.
Shropshire Council said the repair work would involve taking down and rebuilding the downstream parapet which has been recently damaged by a vehicle impact.
Kerbing and bollards will also be installed to try to reduce road collisions.

You know, it would be cheaper in the long run just to build a new bridge, just to the right (in the photo) of the existing one.
Or is that too obvious?

Why build it to the right of the existing bridge? – just replace the damn thing!
And before anybody says that the C15th bridge must be protected you should realise that it has been rebuilt so many times it is hardly an old construction.
How much has been spent repairing / rebuilding this bridge over the past 10-20 years?

very confusing last night monday 17th all the diversions were up and signs saying the bridge was shut even though it was still open. lot of confusion generally with diversions. yes i agree why not build a sepereat bridge to the side of this one. surely it would be cheaper over the years. the obvious is usually the best

What gets me is they bleat on about “preserving” the bridge but there is not a lot of it thats orignal.
it would make sense to rebuild the bridge 20m upstream as a pedestrian access with a new wider bridge in its place. That way it would be hidden from view by the old bridge for the photos.
It must be cheaper than all the money they have spent over the last forty years that i know of.
