Wem speed crackdown begins

A police crackdown on speeding motorists is being launched in Wem from today after figures revealed almost half of all drivers were breaking the limit.

West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership will place a mobile speed camera in Whitchurch Road following concerns from residents.

Speed data collected over a week showed that 45 per cent of all vehicles exceeded the 30mph speed limit and 15 per cent of vehicles travelled above 39.2mph.

The camera will be in place for six months and data will be collected to assess the scheme’s impact on drivers.

Well a quick look at google maps shows the problem…… http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=whitchurch+road+wem&hl=en&ll=52.862951,-2.720318&spn=0.006568,0.011716&sll=52.673971,-2.469842&sspn=0.026386,0.046864&vpsrc=6&hnear=Whitchurch+Rd,+Wem,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=16

It’s obvious, if 45% of drivers think 30MPH is too low, then it should be a 40MPH road. As can be seen there are no obvious reasons why it shouldn’t be. If the council had taken speed surveys before dropping the limit to 30MPH, they would have found mean speeds to be in excess of 30MPH and should therefore have left it as a 40MPh limit until it gets nearer to the town centre.

An obvious blunder by the SCC highways dept.
