A group of French travellers who set up camp on a Shrewsbury town centre car park have left the site.

More than a dozen caravans moved on to Abbey Foregate car park on October 8 and were served with an eviction notice by Shropshire Council last Monday.

John Taylor, gipsy liaison officer, said: “The travellers at the car park at Abbey Foregate left the site at the weekend.”

Presumably having got off scot free with their illegal parking.
I thought the council were strapped for cash, how much did they lose in fines with this bunch?
However little it was, it SHOULD have been collected, had it been Joe Public, they would have been down on him in no time.

In response to Colin’s message the travellers paid the daily fee and caused no problems….. so what’s the issue??

How would they have obtained the money if they would have issued a fine? Likelyhood, it would have proceeded to court to enforce the fine by which time they would have been long gone & the Council would have had a bigger bill to pay.

Did they pay their parking fees for the week or is ther one law for them and one for the rest of us ?I believe there is no overnight parking allowed on our car parks.
They should now fix parking barriers, take your ticket on entry and pay when you leave.
If you did this in France you would be arrested and your van confiscated.
    The E U is wonderful ???

Let us hope that they enjoyed their visit to the county town and leave with a positive impression of Shropshire people.

Its sad that their presence elicited so much intolerance.

It’s as if the Battle of the Beanfield never happened. Given the number of people in England that will be made homeless when the hike in ‘social housing’ rents kicks in there will be no room in our car parks for foreign gypsies. ‘Be off’ I say. ‘English car parks for English homeless people living in English caravans’. All together now …

They’ve turned up in the racecourse car park in Worcester. They are very impressed with the town they are staying as long as they can, can’t beat a free holiday can you?

They should be forcibly evicted and yes we are intolerant to foreigners who treat us for mugs.
They know damn well it is illegal to park on any other site except a registered camp, you try the same thing in France and see how tolerant they are.

The xenophobia in response to this story is staggering but not altogether suprising. Thats the provincial mentality for you…

Given what’s happening right now in the media regarding Dale farm eviction of ‘travellers’ i don’t believe this has anything to do with ‘small town mentality’. Its to do with wherever travellers go, they are using the NHS & schools, whilst not paying anything into the system, no taxes, nothing. Why should land that is owned by another company be taken over rent free? would you like that if they decided to camp in your back garden? would you say ‘fair enough’?
Please don’t say this is my small small town mentality as i live in London!
To stereo-type all persons that live in Shrewsbury are Xenophobic is surely prejudicial? don’t be a hypocrite.

The fact that you livein a welfare state means that there will be some people who are supported by the system who make no contribution to the system. If you dont like it then I hear America does things slighty differently, with varying degrees of success..

Xenophobia no – an institution that is unable to apply the laws of the land to all -yes.

100′s of MP’s falsify claims; stealing from us all – why only a few prosecuted?

Traveller’s drive uninsured, untaxed, non MOT’d vehicles – why do police turn a blind eye?

Tax paying Joe public – tough luck.

No one suggests where they should live. They exist so therefore have to be somewhere. Just not in my back yard I guess. I do understand they are not everyone’s cup of tea but no one ever offers solutions.

I’m appalled by so much ‘not in my back yard’ nonsense. The travellers were in a car park, not in anybody’s garden. Btw I’ve just offered a spare house (rent free) to a transsexual asylum seeker. Why can’t people show some kindness to people who are, in some way, ‘different’.
