TA recruitment call to renew links with Oswestry

Oswestry’s proud links with the Territorial Army are set to be re-established through a major recruiting campaign.
Oswestry has had strong connections with the Shropshire Yeomanry cavalry unit since the 1700s. The town’s citizens even played an important part in supporting the county’s troops during the Boer War when residents gathered the then huge sum of £600 to pay for a machine gun.
The Shropshire Yeomanry machine gun section, complete with the Oswestry gun, sailed from Glasgow in 1900 and was soon in action taking part in important engagements, most notably at Rooidam, near Kimberley.
