Shropshire Council told to cut assets, not pay
Friday 14th October 2011, 11:43AM BST.
More Shropshire Council assets should be sold off as an alternative to cutting the pay of workers any further, union chiefs today said.
Officials at Unison have said Shirehall bosses should do anything they can to avoid cutting the pay of staff.
And Rick Tudor, the union’s regional organiser, said the authority should investigate selling more assets to protect workers.
Mr Tudor made his comments after the council raised £2.3 million from selling off land and property at an auction in London.
It comes after Shropshire Council put forward plans to Unison, Unite and GMB to limit next year’s planned pay cut for council staff to a maximum 1.9 per cent, down from the originally proposed 2.7 per cent.
Mr Tudor said: “They should look at anything that can be done in terms of raising money to avoid cutting pay and conditions.
“The lifeblood of the council is its employees and looking after people. But questions have to be asked. Is this money going to be used for looking at ways to avoid further changes to terms and pay or going into the council’s reserves?”
His comments come as members of Unison met in Shrewsbury last night to discuss plans put forward by Shropshire Council, with further summits to be held in Ludlow and Wem today.
Unison is preparing to ballot their members from next week on whether to accept the proposals.
Council leader Keith Barrow said the council was happy to reach common ground on the changes.
