An 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Shrewsbury Quarry, police said today.
Officers issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident which happened some time between 11pm on Sunday and 1.30am on Monday.
A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and given police bail while inquiries continue. The teenage victim was left upset but not seriously hurt.
Detective Sergeant John Weaver said: “The exact location in the Quarry is not clear. I am appealing to anyone who passed through the park late on Sunday night and up to around 1.30am on Monday, to contact Shrewsbury CID on 0300 333 3000 if they saw a couple engaged in sexual activity.
“It may not have been immediately apparent that an assault was taking place.”

He said the woman had earlier been talking with the man holding a carrier bag near the play area in the Quarry.
“The man was carrying a carrier bag and had with him a bottle of vodka and a small bottle of Coke. He was also carrying a pair of trainers in the carrier bag,” he added.
Detective Sergeant Weaver added: “Although the incident happened late at night, the Quarry is used by many people as a short cut on their way home.”
