Concerns over elderly care at Shropshire hospitals

A health watchdog has raised minor concerns about some aspects of how elderly people are cared for at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The study from the Care Quality Commission found half of hospitals were failing to provide all-round good nutrition to elderly patients while 40 per cent did not offer dignified care.

Of 100 hospitals investigated in England, concerns were raised at 49. They included the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where minor concerns were raised about dignity and nutrition.

Vicky Morris, chief nurse and director of quality and safety at the trust, said she had asked matrons across the trust to discuss the report with their teams so that everybody had the opportunity to ‘learn and improve’.

I dont think enough people complain about care for the elderly especially at the PRH.

The care they gave my late grandmother was below standard and I complained to the Trust and also to my MP. I received correspondence within 7 days which isnt enough time to look into my concerns but the Trust deemed it adequate.

Some time after my grandmother passed away another member of my extended family ended up in the PRH and his care was none existent.

People need to complain to the Trust if they have a real concern about any elderly patient

My father passed away 3 years ago and unfortunately had to spend quite a bit of time in and out of Shrewsbury Hospital. He had a severe stroke 7 years before he passed away. I am shocked that the report only shows MINOR concerns about dignity and nutrition! I really feel for elderley who have no relatives to stand up for them. Management thinks too much about saving money than nursing and caring for elderley patients.

I also feel the same about the elderly who have no living relative to look out for them.

I think after reading this today in the Shropshire Star that I am going to write again to my MP solely about this MINOR problem and I urge others to do so, even if you have an example from years ago, it is still relevant.

My father is currently in the RSH on ward 21 which is the Chemotherapy Ward and only today I asked the nurse if he had improved and she couldnt tell me!!

there’s nothing “minor” about dignity and nutrition particularly in relation to the vulnerable.A difficult job in these times of shortage i know, but we put all our trust in these places, they deserve every praise when they get it right but they also need a good kick up the posterior when standards start to slip.
