Council bosses claim extra revenue created by a £4 million revamp of Telford Ice Rink will cover the costs of the refurbishment within three years before going on to make money.
It is hoped plans to expand the facilities, including a redesign and refurbishment of the interior of the building and an extension to include a new children’s soft play area, will generate extra income.
Telford & Wrekin Council, which owns the site, put its lease out to tender last year but has now decided to hold on to the rink and invest.
The plans have been branded a ‘terrible deal’ by former leader of the council, Andrew Eade, who said he had lined up an investor to put £3.5 million into the rink before losing power in May.
But council leader Kuldip Sahota said: “The council’s recommendation shows our long-term vision to invest in the services in this borough, help this council generate extra income and further support the Southwater scheme.”
