Crash data prompts Oswestry 20mph call
Wednesday 12th October 2011, 1:29PM BST.
Fresh calls have today been made for a blanket 20mph speed limit in Oswestry town centre amid claims new crash data proves roads are being used as ‘race tracks’.
Town campaigners say Government data on car crashes, which has just gone online, paints a picture of how dangerous Oswestry’s roads are.
The data has prompted a town councillor to call again for a blanket 20mph speed limit in the town.
The crashmap.co.uk site reveals where crashes happen in the town, with many happening in the town centre’s narrow roads including Castle Street, Victoria Road and Salop Road.

Peter Lloyd of the Oswestry 21 campaign group said: “The information should give ammunition to those wanting a 20mph limit in urban Oswestry.
“The ‘race track’ roads, used to circulate around the town centre, have seen a relatively high level of injuries.
“Castle Street has experienced 10 incidents, Victoria Road 11, Salop Road eight, Oswald Road and Roft Street four each.”
Town councillor Saffron Rainey said the data proved a 20mph speed limit would help cut down on accidents on the town’s narrow streets.
The councillor called for a blanket reduction in May last year and said the new information supported his call.
He said: “Some roads around the town have become race tracks because people know they can travel at 30mph so they do. But 30mph in the town centre is completely inappropriate.”
