Widow: Ward merger move a dreadful idea
Saturday 8th October 2011, 3:08PM BST.
The widow of a founding member of the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre Appeal today branded plans to merge a cancer ward with another at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a ‘dreadful’ idea.
Pat Davies, whose late husband Frank started the fund with Bernard Lingen in the late 1970s, was shocked to hear of proposals to combine the 16-bed oncology facilities at the hospital with the haematology ward, resulting in the loss of a number of beds.
Health bosses claim the RSH has too many beds compared to similar hospitals across the UK.
“I think it is dreadful. The whole idea of the fund was to keep patients and relatives close together. The ward is always full so where are patients going to be shuttled off to?,” she said.
