Free parking to boost Shrewsbury Christmas trade
Friday 7th October 2011, 2:30PM BST.
Late-night Christmas shoppers will be able to park for free in Shrewsbury as part of a scheme to boost trade in the town centre during the festive run-up.
From November 23, Park and Ride buses and car parking in most town centre car parks will be free after 4pm on Wednesdays.
The announcement follows talks between Shropshire Council and traders’ organisation Shop in the Loop over ways in which shoppers could be encouraged into the town centre over the Christmas period.
It has been agreed to make the Park and Ride service free after 4pm, along with all Shropshire Council-owned car parks, with the exception of the Raven Meadows multi-storey and The Strand, on the five Wednesdays leading up to Christmas.
Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council cabinet member for transport, said: “I’m pleased we have been able to agree these concessions which I hope will encourage more people to visit Shrewsbury to do their Christmas shopping.”
The move was welcomed by Philip Freeman, chairman of Shop in the Loop.
“This announcement will be welcomed by town centre traders, and will be a boost for late night shopping on the run-up to Christmas. Parking charges remain a major issue for us,” he said.
On-street car parking charges will stay the same over the Christmas period.
The announcement comes after the council announced a new two-hour tariff at the Raven Meadows multi-storey and The Strand.
