New equipment and more than 22,000 tonnes of salt has been stockpiled in Powys to cope with snow and ice on the county’s roads this winter.

Powys County Council has been updating and improving its winter maintenance plans in anticipation of difficult conditions on the region’s roads.

The authority said it had experienced three very harsh winters and last year had found supplies stretched because the cold weather had lasted a lot longer than anticipated.

The council has a fleet of more than 30 gritters and last winter used more than 22,000 tonnes of salt in operations costing up to £2 million.

Councillor Geraint Hopkins said: “We are hoping for a milder time this season but have staff and equipment ready to pre-treat and clear roads if and when the wintery weather arrives.

“The council is investing even more in salt stock raising reserves for the start of the season.”

He said the council would be re-stocking roadside and community salt stores for self-service.

And he urged residents to be responsible when using salt supplies and contact the council if they were concerned that some were abusing supplies.
