Mid Wales teachers set to go on strike
Tuesday 4th October 2011, 12:41PM BST.
Teachers across Mid Wales will go on strike tomorrow over plans to change their pensions, it was revealed today.
Teaching union UCAC, which represents about 3,500 staff across the country, is taking the one-day action after 89 per cent of those who took part in a poll voted for industrial action.
It is unclear exactly how schools in Powys will be affected, although Welshpool High School said some disruption would happen.
Jim Toal, headteacher at Welshpool High School, said the school would still be able to provide a full timetable and all pupils should attend as normal.
He said: “To enable suitable provision during those lessons affected, we are requesting that students who have a lesson in classrooms 21, 22 and 23 on Wednesday bring suitable reading material with them for that period when an independent supervised reading session will be undertaken.”
Elaine Edwards, UCAC’s general secretary, said the strike was in protest at Westminster Government’s plans to cut pensions.
