Radio heads complete broadcast marathon
Saturday 1st October 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Two up-and-coming stars of the airwaves have completed a 24-hour broadcasting marathon from a flat in Shrewsbury.
Childhood friends Simon Berry and Tim Barnes, who are both 24, started their challenge at 10pm on Tuesday night from Mr Barnes’s flat in Castlefields, continuing to broadcast all the way through to the same time the next day in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
The pair, who attended Greenacres Primary School and The Grange together, have been putting out their own comedy podcasts for the past year and are now both studying for radio production degrees at Glyndwr University in Wrexham.
Mr Berry, who is from Harlescott, said that the pair had come up with the idea a few weeks ago to try and test their broadcasting skills and raise money for charity.
The pair have raised nearly £600 so far and are aiming to eventually reach £1,000.
He said it had been a challenge to find interesting topics to talk about over the course of the podcasting marathon, which saw the pair record one 10-minute podcast per hour to put online.”
He added: “It took up a surprising amount of time to do. It was 10 to 15 minutes to record, then more time to upload and put them on the internet. So we didn’t have a huge amount of time to eat or do anything else. We were struggling at three in the morning but by 5am or 6am the sun was coming up and it felt alright. But we started to wane again in the afternoon.”
