County’s road deaths shown in new map

Death rates on Shropshire’s roads are at their lowest since the 1990s – but Powys is one of the worst areas for accidents in the UK, a new interactive road safety map has shown.
Road Safety Analysis has developed an interactive map so that local authorities and drivers can compare areas for road safety. The map shows how many people were killed or seriously injured in each county between 2005 and 2009.
And its latest figures show that in Powys four times as many people died than in areas across the UK including Plymouth, East Dunbartonshire and Torfaen, South Wales.
Casualties on Welsh roads are currently at the lowest rate since records began, but in Mid Wales the number of fatalities rose by nearly 25 per cent between 2008 and 2009.
In Shropshire and Worcestershire where figures are collated together, 47 people were killed on the roads in 2010, compared to an average of 97 between 1994 and 1998.
