Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to get new trauma unit
Friday 30th September 2011, 7:00PM BST.
One of Shropshire’s main hospitals will become home to a new trauma unit which could save up to 40 more lives each year, it has been confirmed.
This week it was revealed the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital could house the unit as part of a new regional set-up for treating people with serious injuries. Health chiefs said the move would benefit people in Shropshire and Mid Wales.
They said it means they will have better access to potentially life-saving services.
It is hoped the new unit will help to save between 25 and 40 lives each year. Patients with the most serious injuries need to be taken to major trauma centres where the most specialised care is available.
The nearest major trauma centres for adults are in Stoke on Trent and Birmingham, and for children it is the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
