Oswestry Leisure Centre will open tomorrow
Friday 30th September 2011, 4:19PM BST.
A ‘long and sometimes frustrating process’ to bring a new leisure centre to Oswestry will come to a conclusion tomorrow when the town’s new modern venue opens at last.
A host of events are planned for the weekend to mark the launch of the new £10 million centre on Shrewsbury Road.
And, for Oswestry residents who can’t wait to see what is on offer, Shropshire Council bosses have given a sneak preview by posting shots of the centre on a special YouTube site.
Plans for a new leisure centre to replace the town’s ageing 1970s centre on College Road were launched several years ago by the now defunct Oswestry Borough Council.
Former borough councillor and current Shropshire Councillor for Oswestry Martin Bennett said he was delighted those plans have at last come to fruition.
He said: “It has been a long and sometimes frustrating process, but I am pleased, after so many years of effort, the new leisure centre is finally here.
“I am sure people will be very impressed with the building and facilities.
“The opening celebrations will take place from 10am until 4pm, with a ribbon being cut for the official opening at 12.30pm.
Free activities including taster sessions in cricket, badminton, paddle sports and dance will be on offer.
Swimming will also be free from 9am until 5pm on Sunday. The centre boasts two pools, a sports hall, fitness suite, activities studio and a multi-function room.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said: “This is a huge step forward.”
