Shrewsbury incinerator witness changes evidence
Thursday 29th September 2011, 6:24PM BST.
One of the key witnesses for the case against building a £60 million incinerator in Shrewsbury has been forced to change his evidence at an appeal hearing.
Mark Walton, an associate director of town planning consultancy Alliance Planning, initially claimed in a written statement he did not believe the burner planned for Battlefield Enterprise Park could be classed as a renewable energy facility.
But Mr Walton agreed to amend part of his evidence and resubmit it to an appeal hearing today following several hours of cross examination by Rhodri Price Lewis QC, who is representing waste firm Veolia Environmental Services.
Veolia, which has signed a 25-year contract to deal with the county’s waste, is appealing against a decision by a Shropshire Council planning committee to refuse consent for the facility last year.
The proposed plant has provoked a storm of controversy.
Mr Walton appeared on day two of the appeal hearing at Shirehall. It is expected to last several weeks. In his initial statement, he said: “It is my understanding that the proposed development is not considered a renewable energy facility.
“Based on the appellant’s difficulty in securing potential users of heat or power in this location, it is considered that the proposal does not represent the right place for the proposed energy from waste facility.”
The hearing continues.
