Shrewsbury man jailed over knife threat

A Shrewsbury man has been jailed for eight months for threatening to stab a man while waving two knives above his head.

Craig Beasley, 21, of Buttington Road in Monkmoor, had earlier admitted a charge of affray and possessing a bladed article, but was at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday for sentencing.

Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said that at 11.15pm, a man was in bed in his home near Buttington Close when he heard noisy passers-by. He shouted at them out of the window to ‘shut up’, but they responded with obscenities.

The noise continued, so the man went outside and asked the two men, including Beasley, to quieten down.

The court heard Beasley told the man he was going to stab him and walked away, but a chase ensued ending up outside Beasley’s house in Buttington Road. Beasley emerged with a nine inch bread knife and a nine inch kitchen knife, which he was waving above his head. He was also saying he would ‘chop up’ the victim, but the police arrived and arrested him.

Mr Michael Sherwood-Smith, for Beasley, said the situation got out of hand, was ‘avoidable’ and should have ended when the man asked the duo to keep quiet.

Recorder Dennis Desmond jailed Beasley for eight months to run concurrently on each charge.
