Shrewsbury incinerator protesters net 1,000 signatures
Tuesday 27th September 2011, 12:54AM BST.
More than 1,000 signatures have been collected by protesters campaigning aga-inst a proposed £60 million incinerator in Shrewsbury.
Waste firm Veolia wants to build the new facility at Battlefield Enterprise Park and is due to begin an appeal against a decision by Shropshire Council to turn down the proposal tomorrow.
A 12-day hearing will take place at Shirehall in Shrewsbury. Campaigners against the site, including the local branch of Friends of the Earth, will be in attendance.
Dave Green, of Shrewsbury FoE, said their campaign against the burner had gained considerable support in Shropshire.
“Members of the group have been round the county collecting petition signatures with over 1,000 now ready to hand in to the appeal. Friends of the Earth are reasonably confident we can win this appeal.”
Veolia said the proposed burner could generate enough power to supply 10,000 homes.
Donald Macphail, of Veolia Shropshire, said the council’s decision – made in September 2010 – had been a ‘disappointment’.
