Oswestry Swan Lane flats ‘should not be demolished’

Drug-plagued flats due for demolition have recently been renovated and should not be knocked down, a councillor said today.

The Swan Lane flats in Oswestry are to be demolished, subject to a consultation exercise, and re- developed with tenants given a ‘home loss payment’ of £4,700.

But the chairman of a parish council said today it was Shropshire taxpayers that would be footing the bill for the loss of the flats.

Shropshire Council this month gave the go-ahead for 48 properties in Swan Lane to be demolished.

But today Ron Jones, chairman of Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council, said: “I am quite appalled we should be knocking down good houses that have been recently renovated just because the people there are not looking after the place.”

Sue Adams, from the housing service at Shropshire Council said: “Shropshire Council is committed to ensuring that people’s properties are of a good standard and it is a legal obligation to ensure that properties are maintained to the required standard.”

    Too right they should not be demolished. The drug problem has nothing to do with the perfectly good accommodation, it’s down to the type of the tenants the council have allowed to occupy them. Kick them out and save us decent taxpayers some hard earned cash!!

    let me have my say

    At a time when we are trying to save money, surely a major revamp both internal and external, plus reviewing current tennents status etc, may be renaming the site.
    Must be more cost effective than what is planned.

    not all the same

    not everyone in swan lane is the same, its a group of certain people who cause the problems, heroin addicts & anti social alcoholics. most of those who live in swan lane are decent people who dont cause trouble. taring everyone with the same brush is not fair. this kind of problem happens all over the country, one group of inconsiderates spoiling it for others.
