About 50,000 people made their way through the gates of this year’s Shrewsbury Flower Show, organisers have confirmed.

Officials from Shropshire Horticultural Society have been counting up the number of ticket sales from the two-day event since it took place in mid-August and are now close to reaching a final total.

The figure is an improvement on the attendance for 2010 when about 45,000 visitors came to the Quarry during a rain-hit weekend.

these figures are confirmation that the Shropshire Horticultural Society urgently need to re-think the Flower Show format. 20 years ago they used to aim for 100,000 over the 2 days. Frankly the Show is the same thing year after year, except there are fewer flowers than before, and unless they come up with something new, the numbers will continue to fall away until the whole thing is unviable. Do they have the imagination to do something about this?

I entirely agree with Richard, in that it’s same old, same old every year. As a Shropshire lad living and working in Wiltshire, I used to look forward to attending the Flower Show, but because there’s never anything fresh about it, I haven’t been for five years. Maybe, the committee are limited by budget or the environment that the show is held in, but surely they can tweak things just a little to improve attendances?

Somethings not right with these figures, I know for a fact that on the Friday they were 40& down on attendance from the year before. With that in mind there is no way they had 50,000 plus through the gates. Even the gate staff will tell you this.
The SHS are just trying get confidence back in the show because they know many people were not happy. Mabe the Shropshire Star should ask them to confirm and be honest about the number of complaints they had about the show…. I think you will find that it is a very high number.
Unless the SHS pull a miracle out of the bag, then i’m afraid the Shrewsbury Flower may have had it’s day and is no going to suffer at the hands of people who canno organise it properly.

It’s sad that they don’t seem interested in changing the show or attracting more families. It’s a very expensive day out just to look at a few displays and trade stands.

I used to go regularly (every other year) but its lost its way. Hugely expensive for a family, full of “corporates” and does little in the way of reflecting the character of Shropshire. It will end up going the same way as the Royal at Stoneleigh show unless they radically change their ideas – a real shame

I hadn’t been to the Flower show since I was a little girl so decided to take advantage of the reduced rate after 6pm on the Saturday. I paid £5 for myself and my two children were free so we got great value for money on the arena events and the fireworks. However I wouldn’t ever pay the all day entrance fee and whilst I know I could have taken in my own snacks, drinks etc, I have to say how disappointed I was with the catering charges, £2.80 for a quite small chips, £2.50 for an ice-cream and £4 a pint was just shocking and to be honest left a very sour taste in what was otherwise an enjoyable 4 hours.
