Fundraisers in Onibury fume as road is closed
Monday 26th September 2011, 8:58PM BST.
Villagers in Onibury claimed they were given barely 24 hours notice that the A49 was being closed on the day of their biggest fundraiser of the year.
Organisers of Onny Parade, Fete and Barbecue said they were forced to hastily draw up signs and put them up on country roads around the village advising local people their event was still going ahead yesterday.
They claim official signs stating the A49 would be closed between Craven Arms and Bromfield to allow for maintenance to Onibury level crossing by Network Rail contractors only went up at 10.30pm on Friday.
But officials at Network Rail have insisted notice for the road closure would have been made to the relevant authorities months in advance to allow the work to go ahead.
Despite the late drama, the event, organised by the Friends of Onny School, raised £2,000 – just £500 short of last year’s record.
