Shropshire pit boy became voice of America
Thursday 22nd September 2011, 10:58AM BST.
Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn is named after the Salopian whose broadcasts were heard by millions but whose memory is almost forgotten back here in the county, writes Toby Neal.
He was a Shropshire pit boy who hauled himself up to become the foremost churchman in America, a preacher known to millions and a pioneer radio minister who commanded a huge audience.
In New York, there is a park named after him in Brooklyn.
When he died, there were thousands at his funeral.
And his name is . . . well, do you know?
He is Samuel Parkes Cadman and, according to Doug Wright of Shifnal who has been researching his ancestor as part of his family history, he is a Salopian whose status and contribution have not been given enough recognition in his native county.
“A lot of people know about him, but there’s no recognition for him in Telford. There’s a statue of Captain Webb, but nothing on Cadman, who is probably the next most famous person to come out of the area.
“There’s a park named after him in New York, but nothing in Telford.
“I was going to start a campaign to get him recognised here. I don’t know how to go about it.”
