Maths exam child’s play for Wem youngsters
Thursday 22nd September 2011, 10:57AM BST.
A GCSE maths exam has proved to be child’s play for these bright sparks at a north Shropshire school who sat the tests at the tender ages of 10 and 11.
The youngsters sat the exam while they were at St Peter’s CE Primary School in Wem. And incredibly all but one managed a grade C, which is the standard most employers look for among school leavers.
In all, 12 children sat the exam. Eleven of them gained a C grade and one got a D.
Education experts today said it was difficult to say whether the children’s success bolstered claims that GCSEs are becoming easier.
Arthur Barnett, a former headteacher in Shropshire, said: “When you look at the advanced level papers from 50 years ago, you wonder if children today would be able to do them, but perhaps children back then would struggle with today’s tests.
“I can’t say if exams now are easier or harder or if standards are declining but results cannot go on improving for ever.”
