Shrewsbury boxing club criticises town’s traffic wardens

Officials from a boxing club in Shrewsbury have hit out at traffic wardens after parents were issued with tickets when they parked in a bus stop for ‘a couple of minutes’ to pick up their children.

Stuart Green, one of the assistant coaches at Shrewsbury Amateur Boxing Club in Smithfield Road, said the tickets were issued at about 7.30pm on Wednesday when parents parked their vehicles at a bus stop across the road from the gym.

Mr Green said the car park was ‘small and was absolutely rammed with cars’ at the time the tickets were issued and parents were there for just a short time.

Shropshire Council today defended its stance on the issue and said the Department for Transport considered parking in a bus stop to be a ‘serious contravention’ of highway regulations.

Mr Green said: “There we- re only a couple of cars par-ked for a couple of minutes. It is more like a lay-by than a bus stop really. It was only being used to park up quic-kly to get the kids and go.”

He said the club’s car park had been full and a pair of traffic wardens had spotted the vehicles in the bus stop and told one of the club members that the owners of the cars needed to move them.

Mr Green claimed one of the wardens said that they would wait five minutes before putting a ticket on the cars, but by the time the parents got outside within a ‘minute or so’ the tickets had already been issued.

“It is a hell of a busy road and you can’t just let kids run across it. At night, there are no buses using it but on Saturdays we make sure nobody uses the stop, but they just didn’t give us any leeway,” he said.

A Shropshire Council spokesman said: “The Department for Transport considers the parking of vehicles in a bus stop to be a serious contravention of the highway regulations. In this respect no observation time is required prior to the issue of a penalty charge notice and commands the higher rate of penalty at £70, a discount of £35 would be accepted if paid within 14 days of the date of issue.”

It’s been a while since I’ve read the highway code, but I don’t recall a section saying you must not park on a bus stop (unless its only for a few minutes whilst you pick up your kids). There’s no other posts on this topic at the time I wrote this one, but I’m guessing there won’t be much sympathy from other posters. The club is right to say that Smithfield road is busy with traffic, traffic such as BUSES that occasionally like to stop!

To lazy to walk, just around the corner about 50 yards away you could have parked free on single yellow lines. I do not believe that you were parked there for only a “couple of minutes” as the wardens DO wait 5 minutes before they ticket you, so just pay up and and next time think.I suppose that if it had been for disabled people you would have said when challenged “I will only be a Minute”

I can relate to the anger felt by the parents and officials of the boxing club. My son is disabled and has a blue badge. My husband dropped him off at the mini bank and then parked in the disabled space to wait for him-the only space next to the bank. Inside of two minutes a ‘jobs worth’ parking attendant was threatening to write out a ticket. My husband explained our son was just around the corner but she said ‘if he can walk that far he shouldn’t have a blue badge’!! My husband had to move the car and drive around the whole town loop. Meanwhile our son was left stranded and distressed. Are the parking officers on a payment by results wage?

Weather it was for a couple of minutes or an hour it makes no difference, they still parked in a bus stop.

I say fine them the full amount.

I can’t see why the club is complaining. Parking in a bus stop is a breach of the regulations, everybody should know that.

I agree with monkey where does it say in the Highway Code that Shrewsbury Boxing Club are exempt from parking regulations. The under paid and often critisied parking enforcement officers in Shrewsbury do an excellent job in difficult situations.

Parents park in a car park its not as if your short of any!!

Yeah, i agree they shouldn’t have parked in a bus stop especially when there is frankwell and raven medows car parks very close by. only takes a few minutes to walk to/from either.

And there was me thinking that boxing clubs helped to discipline people, yet the parking wardens do the same they are criticised. Time to throw in the towel Mr Green, you’re on a loser here

Strange that however long somebody was illegally parked and gets a ticket, they were only there for a ‘couple of minutes’, they really are unlucky people aren’t they? Either that or they chose to ignore the law that the rest of us find it so easily to comply with. Cough up and stop moaning.

Surely the CCTV would show how long the ‘couple of minutes’ they were actually there. I doubt though that anybody would risk being shown to be economical with the truth during this desperate search for sympathy.
