Weather to blame for fall in Oswestry outdoor market income
Saturday 17th September 2011, 1:06PM BST.
An Oswestry councillor reckons he knows why the town’s Wednesday outdoor market has suffered a slump in rental income – it’s the UK’s ‘interesting’ weather patterns this year.
Councillor Martin Bennett’s theory is the worst weather always seems to hit Oswestry on a Wednesday.
And if it is not Wednesday, then it is Saturday, which is the other day Oswestry holds its outdoor market, the councillor suggests.
Town councillors were told at their markets and car parks meeting that there were growing concerns about falling rental income from stallholders on the Wednesday market on the Bailey Head.
A report said this year’s average income was £435, compared to £482 last year. It added: “The decrease is primarily due to the ‘attend four get the fifth one free’ scheme as traders numbers are very slightly up.”
Committee chairman Councillor Betty Gull said the market slump had to be investigated.
