Telford & Wrekin Council fraud probe revealed
Saturday 17th September 2011, 7:35PM BST.
Nearly 100 days were spent over a 12-month period investigating alleged cases of internal fraud at Telford & Wrekin Council.
The investigations included the Dawley Town Hall lease arrangements and alleged benefit fraud by a council employee.
Council chiefs also looked into potential irregular or fraudulent activity around the I can 2 disability charity and “computer misuse” by authority staff. In total 95 days had to be allocated to 11 different cases.
The information is revealed in a report to go before the council’s audit committee on Tuesday.
According to the report, cuts in resources could also lead to a potential increase of internal fraud at the council.
Charlotte Bone, spokeswoman for Telford & Wrekin, said the council takes a proactive stance in tackling fraudulent activity.
She said: “The council has a duty to investigate any such complaint and, while no fraudulent activity was found, we have as a result made some changes to improve our process and procedures.”
