Powys County Council’s £6m bill for consultants

Powys County Council spent more than £6.1 million of taxpayers money on consultants’ fees last year, it has emerged – almost double the amount spent in 2009.

The claim has been made by the council’s Welsh Conservative Group, adding that in 1999 the council spent just £86,348 on consultants.

Group joint leader Aled Davies said £3.2 million was spent in 2009 and £6,104,923 in 2010.

“The increase in the consultancy bill over the last few years has been dramatic at a time when the council is looking to make large cuts,” he said. “This is a huge sum of money in anybody’s language – it is equivalent to £100 for every household.

“Powys County Council’s £6 million bill for consultancy is the same as the spend on its sixth forms.”

Powys County Council has defended the spending.

Councillor Tony Thomas, cabinet member for finance, said: “We use a number of framework agreements with specific contractors to deliver various design and construction projects as and when needed.” He said the agreements were ‘more economical’.
