Oswestry community wants more spent on young people

A community near Oswestry is calling for lottery funding to be spent on better opportunities for young people, affordable housing and projects to tackle unemployment.
The national Big Local lottery programme has awarded £1 million to the St Martins, Weston Rhyn and Gobowen area, saying the community has not had significant lottery awards over the years.
A consultation exercise is now under way to give people living in the three villages the chance to say how the money should be spent over the next decade.
A recent meeting was held for representatives of the three parish councils to see what the areas had in common – both good and bad.
The latter included a lack of employment opportunities, affordable housing, public transport recreation space and play areas. Poor broadband internet coverage was also flagged up as was the ageing population.
Brian Ashton from the project group looking at the funding, said the meeting drew up a table of key priorities for the area.
He said many of these involved young people, including the lack of housing and improving access to facilities at Rhyn Park Secondary School in St Martins.
The housing needs of local elderly people were also put forward as a priority.
Improving business and employment opportunities were a common suggestion – identifying new employment land improving broadband, increasing training opportunities and tourism.
