Benefits worth £420,000 falsely claimed in Telford

More than £420,000 was falsely claimed in benefits by people in Telford over a 12-month period, it was revealed today.

Benefit fraud officers at Telford & Wrekin Council received 1,293 tip-offs about possible benefit cheats from March 2010 to March 2011.

Of those, 429 were taken on for investigation.

The figures were revealed in a report to go before the council’s audit committee on Tuesday.
