Oswestry car parks see rise in takings
Thursday 15th September 2011, 2:04PM BST.
Car parks in Oswestry have taken in more money this year compared to the same period 12 months ago despite a hike in charges.
The figures have led town councillors to claim it shows shoppers are still coming to Oswestry.
A report said all of Oswestry Town Council’s car parks enjoyed a rise in revenue so far this year in comparison to last.
The report said total income at Central Car Park for April to August was £186,724 this year compared to £161,902 last year, an increase of 15.3 per cent.
Income at the Horsemarket during the same period rose by 14.9 per cent from £28,023 last year to £32,194 this year. And takings were up at the Smithfield Street car park by 8.7 per cent with income rising from £33,843 to £36,781.
Councillor Martin Bennett said: “This information shows that by far the greatest majority of people using the car parks are parking for up to two hours.
Councillor Betty Gull said: “These figures prove there is a footfall in Oswestry because if there are tyres in Oswestry, there must be people driving them.”
Councillor Heather Bickerton warned that it did not always translate into more shopping being done in local shops.

Does this figure take into account the parking charges raise, not so long ago, if it has then it is good news, so why not have some free parking days, you get even more folk into town to shop !!
